How Often Should You Clean Your Windows in the GTA?

Windows in the Greater Toronto Area take a beating: road salt spray from November to March, tree pollen in May, construction dust in the summer, and leaf debris and rain in the fall. Here is how often they actually need cleaning, what changes the answer, and what a professional clean includes.

The short answer: twice a year, spring and fall

For most GTA homes, two professional cleans a year keep the glass clear year-round. The spring clean removes the winter film of salt, grit and road spray. The fall clean clears the summer dust and pollen so the windows are clean for the holidays and through the dark months, when you notice every streak.

The best spring window is mid-April to mid-May, after the last freeze and before the pollen peaks. For the fall clean, wait until most of the leaves are down in late October or November.

When you need it more often

• Homes near major roads or the 400 series highways: exhaust film and brake dust build up on the outside of the glass within weeks.
• Lots of mature trees: sap, pollen and bird droppings, especially on the side facing the trees.
• New builds and construction nearby: fine dust settles on glass daily until the site is done.
• Homes with pets and young kids: nose prints, fingerprints and condensation on the inside.
• Sprinklers hitting the glass: hard water spots that etch the surface if they are left for a season.

If two or more of those apply, a quarterly clean is worth it. An exterior-only clean in between the two full cleans costs less because there is no interior work.
