Fall Gutter Cleaning in the GTA: Why Late November Is the Deadline
Published October 2026 · AmberMount House Detailing
Gutter cleaning in the GTA has a deadline, and it is not the first snowfall. It is the first stretch of nights that stay below zero, because once the wet leaves in the trough freeze solid they cannot be cleared safely until a thaw. In most years that puts the cut-off in late November. Here is why the window closes, what happens if you miss it, and what to look for now.
Why the window closes in late November
Three things line up at the end of November. The last of the leaves come down, usually by the middle of the month once the oaks and Norway maples let go. The rain that follows packs them into a wet mat in the trough. Then the temperature drops and stays down. A gutter cleaned in early November fills again from the last drop; a gutter cleaned in the first week of December may already be frozen. The sweet spot for most GTA homes is the last two weeks of November, after the trees are bare and before the freeze.
The timing moves a little every year, which is why it is worth picking a date rather than waiting on the forecast: the goal is to have the gutters clear before the cold settles in, whatever week that turns out to be.
What happens if you wait
- Ice dams. Water sitting in a full gutter freezes, the ice builds up against the fascia and under the first row of shingles, and meltwater backs up under the roof. Icicles along the roof edge are the visible sign; the damage is behind them.
- Overflow at the foundation. A blocked trough sends water over the front edge instead of to the downspout. It lands right at the foundation, which is the one place you do not want it in a freeze-thaw climate.
- Fascia and soffit rot. Wet debris sits against the wood behind the gutter all winter.
- Weight. Frozen, packed leaves are heavy. Hangers pull loose and the trough sags, so the next clog happens faster.
- A spring surprise. Whatever is in the gutter in December is still there in March, when the spring rain starts and the trough needs to work.

What a gutter clean includes
A proper clean is more than scooping the leaves you can see from the ladder.
- All debris out, by hand and with gutter vacuums, including the sediment under the leaves. Gutter guards are cleaned too.
- Downspouts flushed and a flow check, so water actually runs to the ground instead of pooling at a blocked elbow.
- A look for leaks, sagging sections and loose brackets while we are up there, with a note to you about anything that needs attention before winter.
- All debris leaves with us. Nothing is dumped in the garden.
Gutter cleaning is booked online with a price based on the size of your home. We recommend at least two cleans a year for most GTA homes: late spring, after the seed pods drop, and late fall, after the leaves are down. Homes under large trees sometimes need a third in mid-summer.
What it costs
Gutter cleaning is priced by the size of your home: $219.58 for homes up to 1,800 sq ft, $311.67 for 1,801 to 2,800 sq ft, $389.58 for 2,801 to 3,500 sq ft, $460.42 for 3,501 to 4,500 sq ft and $535 above that, all before HST. Guards, downspout flushing and the inspection are included, and the price shows before you confirm the booking.
Signs to look for now
You do not need a ladder to check. Next time it rains, look at the gutters from a window or the driveway.
- Water pouring over the front edge, or a steady stream at one corner.
- Something green growing out of the trough.
- A section that sags, or a gap opening at a seam.
- Dark streaks on the siding or brick under the gutter line.
- Icicles along the roof edge last winter.
Any one of those means the gutter is already full. We cover what each sign means in 5 Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning Before Winter.
Already past the deadline?
If the freeze beat you to it, do not send anyone up to chip at ice. Frozen debris does not come out cleanly and the trough and hangers are easy to damage. The next safe window is a thaw, a few days in a row above zero, which usually comes in January or February, or early spring before the rain starts. Book the spring clean early; the downspouts get flushed as part of it, and whatever froze in the elbows in December will still be there.
Pick a date in the last two weeks of November and book it now. If the leaves are late, the date can move. If the freeze is early, you are already on the calendar instead of waiting for a thaw in January.
